Better than the original.
While I do love the original and I own a bottle, I much prefer the extrait. The original is light, girlie, sweet in a candy-like manner. It reminds me of a sugary, fizzy drink, like a creamy cherry float, if there is such a thing.
The extrait is designed for the adults, bored and ready to leave the children’s party, and wanting something that will suit the nighttime with grown-ups solely and substantial conversation starters. More seductive, it is darker, complex, and quite addictive.
There is still a link as a nod to the original Rouge Smoking in the way the cherry is done. It is very much present, especially in the beginning. But it transforms during the wear due to the base notes carrying more weight.
I understand the extrait wasn’t well received, but it deserves praise. If you love the original, maybe see the extrait as a stand-alone, lest you be disappointed. Though that might be from expectations, rather than an objective opinion.
