An ancient art, thousands of years old — yet one that evolves with every advance in chemistry and every shift in what we long to smell.
The Art & Science of Perfumery
At its core, the craft of a perfumer rests on a deep understanding of how different materials behave — from the delicate brightness of flowers to the earthy undertones of woods and resins. A perfumer must also know their chemistry: a harmonious, stable fragrance demands precise measurement and careful blending of every ingredient.
The Process of Fragrance Creation
Every new fragrance begins with a concept or an inspiration — drawn from nature, from emotion, or from a single striking ingredient. From there, the perfumer selects and combines notes to reach the scent they imagine, layering top, middle and base perfume notes into a composition that unfolds over time.
Top notes are the first impression — light and fresh. Middle, or heart, notes give the fragrance its body and character. Base notes form the foundation, lending depth and longevity. The skilful layering of these three is what makes each scent unique and memorable.
The Role of Perfumers in the Industry
Perfumers drive innovation and shape trends. Their creations can define a brand, evoke a way of life, or come to mark a whole generation. Working closely with houses to understand a vision and an audience, they craft scents that align with a brand’s identity and speak to the people it hopes to reach.
