When we launched Beautinow.com in 2020, our store focused exclusively on ‘niche perfume.’ At the time, we felt pretty confident what the term meant. However, over the years, we’ve come to realize that ‘niche’ is a fluid concept, one that’s not easy to define. Not only does everyone seems to have their own interpretation of what qualifies as niche, the definition itself has also evolved over time. As a retailer, we would like to contribute our insights to this topic.
6 Traits That Define the Meaning of Niche Perfume

As a start of this discussion, let’s list all the characteristics, which we believe often indicate whether a fragrance is niche or not:
- Quantity: niche fragrances are typically produced in smaller quantities.
- Ingredients: they’re commonly made from higher quality ingredients.
- Craft: they’re often made by individual artists or small perfume houses.
- Price: as the fragrances are made from higher quality ingredients and crafted in smaller batches, they tend to be also more expensive.
- Uniqueness/audience: when a perfumer truly wants to craft a niche fragrance, he/she will embrace ‘artistic freedom’. Instead of feeling the obligation to satisfy the mainstream, the perfume may craft fragrances that a smaller community will enjoy.
- Availability: niche scents tend to be less available. This is related to the smaller batch production trait, but more importantly because retailers are less incentives to stock them for economical reasons.
So in summary, a profile of a niche fragrance may look like this: a fragrance that is created and marketed by an independent brand or individual artist in limited quantities and with limited availability, and is made from high quality ingredients and smell more uniqueness. Yet, what does limited availability and quantity actually mean? And what exact figure makes a niche perfume ‘limited’ in supply.
The Rise of Baccarat Rouge 540
Before 2020, perfume enthusiasts would mostly agree with each other whether a specific fragrance is niche or not. But this change in 2020, when the popularity of Baccarat Rouge 540 took off. Amongst fragrance lovers, this scent launched in 2014 was absolutely considered niche. It smelled like no other and the longevity and sillage was off the charts. If you wanted to smell unique and get noticed, that’s the fragrance you must have in your wardrobe. The fragrance wasn’t easy available, made from unique and high quality ingredients, such as Hedione and Ambroxan, combined innovatively with saffron and cedar wood. It effectively checked all the boxes for the traits we outlined above.
But things changed when this fragrance hit mainstream popularity in 2020.
Suddenly this fragrance was available in every department store, and designer brands started to launch their own fragrances that smelled similar. Now what used to be a fragrance that made you smell unique during evening parties, is now making you smell like everyone else. Whether or not Baccarat Rouge 540 is still niche, has now changed from fact to opinion.
What if Niche is Going Mainstream?
In recent times, niche perfumes have been witnessing a surge in popularity among mainstream fragrance lovers due to their originality, creativity, and exclusivity. This reflects a broader societal trend where people prioritize expressing their individuality and personal taste over simply aiming to smell pleasant for others.
This is related to the idea that niche perfumes are nowadays more often regarded as works of art. Like with art opinions will differ, and each of us may have a difference preference/taste for art.
Are Niche Perfumes Better?
Whether a niche perfume is better than mainstream fragrances is ultimately up to personal preference. Niche perfumes tend to be more unique and they will make you stand out from the crowd, while designer fragrances tend to be more liked by a larger crowd. When it comes to the price, mainstream fragrances tend to be more accessible.
What are Niche Perfume Brands
Determining whether a perfume brand is niche or not can also be a subjective task. While some brands offer a blend of niche and mainstream options, others exclusively focus on crafting niche fragrances. It’s worth noting that even within a brand, certain perfumes may possess a more niche appeal than others. The definition of what is niche and what isn’t also evolves over time: some niche scents may become so popular that they become mainstream over time. At last, the classification of what defines a niche brand is partially subject to personal interpretation.
That said, notable brands that are often considered ‘niche’ include Byredo, Creed, Kilian, Replica, Tom Ford, Le Labo, and Jo Malone.
Where to Buy Niche Perfume
Determining the right place to buy fragrances is of course a matter of personal preference. You may visit physical stores near you and check if they’ve a decent niche perfume selection. Simply type ‘perfume stores near me’ in Google Maps, and you’ll have a good list of options to checkout. One benefit of visiting a physical store is that you can smell the perfume tester bottles before you buy. And if you’ve a hard time making a good choice, there’s always staff that can offer recommendations. An obvious downside of buying in a physical store is the price. Often times prices are much lower online. Therefore, it’s a good idea to always check the prices online before you buy. If you’re based in Europe, we highly recommend to browse our niche perfume catalog to see the lowest prices available. At Beautinow.com you can browse niche perfumes by gender (for him/for her), niche perfume brand, and even mood and scent notes! Happy shopping!
