History & Origin

This British perfumery was founded in the year 1870 by William Penhaligon. He initially owned a barbershop but decided to launch fragrances in keeping up with the times. Penhaligon’s released its first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, in 1872, which drew inspiration from the neighboring Turkish Bath and its steam. Walter Penhaligon inherited the business in 1901 and, in 1902, they came up with Blenheim Bouquet upon the request of the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace, Instead of following the floral trends of the day, this fragrance broke the mold with its citrus, spicy, and woody notes.

The original shop on Jermyn Street launched new fragrances regularly until it was destroyed in The Blitz of 1941. However, the company’s reputation held its own even in those tough times. Finally, in 1956, Penhaligon’s was given a Royal Warrant by the Duke of Edinburgh for the manufacturing of toiletries.

The launch of a new Penhaligon’s flagship store in Covent Gardens in 1975 brought the brand back into the mainstream market. Older perfume formulae by William Penhaligon were brought back and the brand began to dabble in new floral scents for the modern woman. They received a second Royal Warrant in 1988 from the Princess of Wales.

Even today, Penhaligon’s is renowned for its commitment to traditional perfume ingredients and techniques.
