This extraordinary brand was launched in 2019 by Aurelien Guichard, one of the most revered perfumers in the world. Hailing from Grasse, he was introduced to the beauty of his fragrance at an early age. His family was responsible for cultivating florals that would be used by major perfumers. Aurelien trained at the Givaudan School, after which his career as a nose took off. He became professionally associated both with more mainstream brands like Davidoff and niche brands like Bond No. 9.

With his own brand, Guichard wanted to capture and celebrate perfume ingredients in their full glory. His creations usually center on heightening the impact of one natural aromatic substance that has many olfactive facets. Aurelien’s goal is to present the central ingredient in its most beautiful textured form. He says,

“My formulas are short. I want you to feel the natural beauty of the raw material at the center of my perfumes. Our mission is in our name – Matiere Premiere is the French phrase for raw material.”

Staying true to his traditions, Guichard grows his own tuberoses and roses in the Grasse region. In 2016, he founded a Rose Centifolia organic farm in conjunction with his family. As of now, he is the only perfumer in the world to own and produce his own Rose Centifolia. In his own words,

“Growing our own rose is a way to reconnect with the essence of the work of a perfumer: creating the fragrance itself, but also supervising the quality and production methods of the raw material.”

All Matiere Premiere perfumes contain between 85-92% natural ingredients. Even the color is not artificially altered and evolves naturally over time. Falcon Leather (leather), Parisian Musc (musk), Neroli Oranger (orange blossom), Radical Rose (rose), French Flower (tuberose), and Crystal Saffron (saffron) are some of the most popular fragrances from the brand.
