Malle initially decided to study Art History in New York, and then went on to become a perfumer at the popular lab of Roure Bertrand Dupont. This is where he learned all about perfume ingredients and compositions. Moreover, he was able to master the business skills required to thrive in the business of perfume creation. Malle then consulted for Hermès under Jean-Louis Dumas, who sent him to perfumery school for two months. After learning invaluable lessons from perfumers like Françoise Caron, Edouard Flechier, and Jean Guichard, he decided to start his own venture.
After spending more than a decade and half associated with the perfume industry, Malle decided to take a leap in his fragrance journey and undertook a new initiative. He invited nine of the best perfumers in the world to create original perfumes in the year 2000, and granted them complete creative freedom so they could bring forth their best. In fact, he did not even place any budgetary constraints upon them in terms of ingredients and perfume technologies. Finally, the fragrances were captured in gorgeous glass bottles that featured the name of perfumers and marketed accordingly.
Malle never looked back. The original nine perfumes are now iconic, even more so because they successfully brought highly talented perfumers to the forefront. Through Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle, he acts as an "editor of perfumes." He refers to the perfumers he works with as "authors," and his intention is to publish more "Editions."
One of the most beloved perfumers in the world, Frederic Malle is a pioneer of niche perfumery. He founded Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle, which continues to be a favorite among fragrance enthusiasts all over the world. Born in Paris in 1962, Malle comes from a family that was already associated with the perfume industry. His grandfather, Serge Heftler, established Christian Dior Perfumes, while Frederic's mother became the Art Director for the same later on. As a result, Frederic grew familiar with the ins and outs of the perfume industry at a very young age.
