Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, currently based in Tokyo and Paris, became famous for his avant-garde tailoring and tendency to incorporate Japanese design aesthetics in his creations. Over the years, he has won many accolades for his contribution to fashion, including the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon, Ordre national du Mérite, and the Royal Designer for Industry.

Yamamoto debuted his first line and laid the foundation for his eponymous brand in 1977. His signature oversized silhouettes often feature textured drapery. He favors the color black in all his collections. He describes the color as "modest and arrogant at the same time... lazy and easy – but mysterious."

Yohji Yamamoto introduced its first fragrance, Yohji 1996, in 1996. The brand continues to release minimalistic and elegant perfumes to this day. Yamamoto has collaborated with respected noses like Olivier Pescheux, Jean-Michel Duriez, and Nathalie Feisthauer.
